The art of Reportage photography is capturing an event in a documentary style. Rather than staging a series of photographs the aim is to document a story as it really happened. It was originally photojournalists who shot in this style. It is often associated with black and white images.
Reportage photography captures an emotion or a visual story of a specific moment in time. The images engage and resonate an atmosphere that makes the audience enquire who the people are, why they are there and what is the overall backstory behind the image. They essentially create a dramatic, almost cinematic arena for the viewer to explore and engage with.
Reportage is for me the theatre of life, told through the eyes of the photographer without becoming too closely involved in the subject matter.
